Apple has finally announced its long-rumored foldable: the iPhone Duo.
The new phone has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, a “nano‑texture” finish on the inner screen, and barely any visible crease. Instead of Face ID, it uses Touch ID on the power button. It has two cameras, a main lens and a wide-angle lens. Apple completely revamped iOS 27’s controls and apps for the foldable, including putting the dock on the side of the phone. And it has a flashy opening animation when you unfold the phone.
We’ve reviewed the Duo, calling it “one of Apple’s messiest first-generation products in a long time,” especially in the software department. But we also think that it’s a phone that’s probably going to be fun for early adopters.
The iPhone Duo a big new bet from Apple, though one that’s a little late to the game compared to competitors like Samsung and Google. The phone isn’t cheap: it starts at $1,999 for the base 256GB model, and the prices only go up from there.
Here’s everything unfolding about the iPhone Duo.
- Apple Stores reportedly got a memo about iPhone Duo screen cracks.
MacRumors says that the instructions for technicians are straightforward, but “the fact that Apple issued an internal memo suggests the issue is widespread enough to warrant official guidance.”
Apple confirmed this week there is an “issue” affecting a “small number” of iPhone Duo units. iFixit told The Verge that cracks might be happening due to the flexible screen pushing up against a part of the hinge.
The Apple Pencil turned the Duo into my new favorite notebook

If not notebook, why notebook shaped? Apple’s $2,000 folding phone is a surprisingly good stand-in for a $20 notebook.
Believe me; nothing gets me going quite like a new notebook. This one will be different, I think. This time, I really will take it everywhere. Inspiration can strike at any moment, and you have to be ready, says David Sedaris in that one MasterClass I watched on a flight. With this one special new notebook, I will see the world differently. I’ll steal moments for myself to write, rather than pulling out my phone to scroll at every opportunity like a trained monkey. And a few weeks, a month, or maybe a year later, I’ll concede that it didn’t change everything and add it to my notebook graveyard. At least they all look nice on the corner of my desk?
Read Article >Here’s why the iPhone Duo’s hinge could be cracking the screen

Image: iFixitWithin hours of the iPhone Duo launch last Friday, people reported that the inner screen on some brand new foldable phones was already broken. The issue was similar across many photos shared on social media: some kind of issue or crack would appear in the middle of the screen above the hinge, with lines appearing on the right side of the display. On Monday, Apple acknowledged an “issue” and said it’s replacing damaged units, without going into much detail about how many broken phones have been reported so far.
So what’s actually going on?

I took Halide’s newly Duo-updated iOS app for a spin to try out the waist-level viewfinder feature, shooting with Process Zero for some added lo-fi flair. It was a good time! But you’re definitely gonna get called out when someone spots it, and the fish-slinging folks at the Pike Place Fish Market don’t miss a beat. They were kind enough to help me test the selfie camera, at least.
iPhone Duo now supports Apple Pencil with iOS 27.2

Photo: Amelia Holowaty Krales / The VergeApple has just released iOS 27.2, bringing Apple Pencil support to the iPhone Duo. The software update also includes an “Edge Light” feature for the iPhone Duo that’s intended to illuminate your face during video calls.
Apple previously said the iPhone Duo would add support for the Apple Pencil “later this year.” The company’s first foldable comes with revamped iOS 27 controls designed to work across the device’s 7.6-inch inner display and 5.4-inch outer screen. Many major apps, like Netflix, Prime Video, and Microsoft Outlook, already support the Duo’s extra screen real estate, but some still need some work.

Halide III just got its iPhone Duo update with re-worked controls for the new screen formats and a feature that Apple’s native camera app left out: a waist-level viewfinder. When you use the phone in its L-shaped pose the image preview will appear on the top portion of the screen. I was hoping I’d be able to move the preview to the lower half of the screen and use it like a classic Hasselblad camera. It’s a nerdy little detail, but Halide is made by nerds, for nerds, and I appreciate that.

Apple acknowledges iPhone Duo display ‘issue’ after reports of cracked screens

Photo: Amelia Holowaty Krales / The VergeFollowing reports of iPhone Duos with cracked and broken inside screens, often showing a bright line running from the center to the right side, Apple says in a statement to Bloomberg and 9to5Mac that it’s aware of “an issue impacting the inner display” on a “small number of iPhone Duo units.” If your iPhone Duo is affected, Apple says to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Here is the full statement, which Apple’s Alex Kirschner shared with The Verge:
Read Article >iFixit’s look inside the iPhone Duo may explain those broken screens and hinges

Image: iFixitAs is tradition, iFixit has torn open the latest iPhone and laid its parts bare on a table. It found some interesting details about how Apple might be hiding the crease on the Duo’s folding screen and gave it a 5/10 repairability score. That might not seem particularly high, but it’s the best score the site has given to a foldable yet.
The internal screen’s matte nano-texture cover doesn’t just make it more readable in bright sunlight; it also helps mask the crease by scattering reflections. When looking at the display under a microscope, iFixit also found oval-shaped subpixels arranged at various angles, which the site believes are designed to reduce artifacts and further mask the crease down the middle of the display.

Image: u/Bitter_Offer7123Social media and the iPhone Duo subreddit are filled with reports of Apple’s foldable failing quickly and in spectacular fashion. Some users report having the phone for only a few hours before the hinge seems to catch on something, then audibly crack and break the screen. Tellingly, the cracks all seem to happen in the same place.
YouTuber CuriousHagi was able to reproduce the cracked screen during some durability testing of the iPhone Duo. Then he pulled it apart to try and find the culprit. What he found is that the Duo’s hinge is quite complex, consisting of a gear-like central hinge and two different types of linking hinges.

Instagram was one of the apps touted as being “Made for iPhone Duo.” The Verge’s Nilay Patel has already pointed out that it’s a bit broken, and now Instagram’s head has replied to a user on Threads, saying that he agrees the app needs a rethink on the wider screen.
- The official iPhone Duo repair manual is here.
Hopefully you don’t need it already. But just in case, here’s a link to the official iPhone Duo repair manual. But you know, maybe try not to break your new $2,000 foldable phone in the first place.

- JerryRigEverything wrecks an iPhone Duo with a handful of dust.
Foldables are fragile beasts. And it turns out the iPhone Duo is no different. The matte internal screen scratches just like all the rest. But the real death knell for Apple’s device is a handful of dirt that works its way into the hinge and keeps the phone from closing ever again.
The first broken iPhone Duos are here

Image: u/Bitter_Offer7123The iPhone Duo officially goes on sale today, but a few units already have broken screens. According to posts on Reddit about the affected units, the issue appears to be happening at a similar spot on all of them: Some kind of problem shows up on the inner screen along the hinge and a strange bright line (or lines) across the right side of the display.
Here’s how one user in Australia described what happened to their phone:

According to a user on Reddit, “Had my iPhone Duo for about six hours and had probably opened it fewer than 20 times. I was showing it to a friend, and as I opened it, I felt something around the internal hinge, underneath the screen. As I continued opening it, I heard an audible crack, and the screen broke right along the hinge.”
They also said the Apple Store already replaced it.
Our best tips for using the iPhone Duo

It’s been a long time since we had to rethink how to use an iPhone. Photo: Amelia Holowaty Krales / The VergeThe Duo is an entirely new kind of iPhone, so it comes with a bit of a learning curve. That’s a wild thing to imagine, since the iPhone has had very few fundamental changes since its inception. But the Duo is built different. If you won the preorder lottery and managed to get your hands on one today, you’ll see what that means. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll lose track of the volume buttons as you turn the thing around.
We’ve learned a few tricks over the past week of flipping and folding the Duo as much as we could. Here are our favorite tips and hacks for newly minted Duo owners.
Read Article >No, the iPhone Duo isn’t a small phone

Don’t be fooled; only one of these is a truly small phone (it’s the iPhone 13 Mini on the left). When we published our review of the iPhone Duo, I got a lot of hopeful questions from my fellow Mini fans who took note of the cover screen’s Mini-ish 5.4-inch size. “Is this… a small phone that turns into a tablet?” they asked. And I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but no. The Duo is not the small phone we’ve been looking for.
I wish it was. I like a small phone. I own an iPhone 13 Mini that I refuse to surrender, even though it barely lasts a full day.

Apple’s foldable is available for purchase and demos at stores worldwide today, and the company is already sharing images of the crowds and customers celebrating the launch at Apple Jing’an, Shanghai. You can check out our iPhone Duo review before you run to your closest Apple store, but be aware that there are only a “limited” number of in-store units available.
- Threads is getting a foldable-optimized layout for the iPhone Duo.
“Tomorrow we’re bringing a new Threads layout to the foldable on iOS, with more of the conversation in view,” says Christopher Clare, Threads’ head of design. Sounds like things are getting better for Android foldables, too: “We’ve also been improving the Android experience, refining buttons and other elements so they fit the wider screen rather than simply stretching the experience.”
Clare also laid out a few other design tweaks, like links “in a new blue.”
Delta can turn the iPhone Duo into your favorite folding handheld

The Duo has a Nintendo DS-like shape anyway, so Delta 2.0 is running with it. Image: Riley TestutThe Delta gaming emulator has been upgraded with a plethora of new goodies and support updates, which include optimizing it for Apple’s iPhone Duo. Delta 2.0 also introduces Sega Genesis games, animated controller skins, custom Pokémon DLC experiences, and a new UI that was built around supporting Liquid Glass.
Adding support for the iPhone Duo is an obvious standout here. If you looked at Apple’s flagship foldable and wondered how well it could emulate Nintendo DS games, this update was made with you in mind. Delta app creator Riley Testut tells The Verge that Delta 2.0 optimizes controller skins for “every pose in both portrait and landscape” and that you can still use split-view multitasking features alongside running other apps. Folding the Duo also puts your emulated DS games into sleep mode, just like closing a real DS would.
Read Article >Apple will label apps that are ‘Made for iPhone Duo’

Photo: Amelia Holowaty Krales / The VergeApple is rolling out a new badge in the App Store to indicate whether an app is optimized for its new foldable. The new “Made for iPhone Duo” badge will appear across apps and games that work with the device’s extra screen real estate.
Though Apple doesn’t include an image of what this badge might look like, it highlighted some of the ways apps are taking advantage of the Duo’s inner and outer screens. Netflix, for example, will display shows and movies that take up the whole inner display, while allowing you to watch its feed of short-form clips on the outside. Amazon’s Prime Video will let you watch shows and movies with the Duo partially folded, with the content on top and details about the cast on the bottom.
Read Article >- The next iPhone Duo could have Face ID.
That’s according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who said Apple is working on next-gen Duo protoypes that have the Face ID sensor located beneath the display on the outer screen. Being demoted to Touch ID has been a step back for the iPhone Duo, but in our review we said it’s “mostly painless” once you get used to it.
- The iPhone Duo’s crease gets a lot more visible after 10,000 folds.
YouTuber Tim Pan put the new Apple foldable through a total of 11,500 folds, a thousand of which were in freezing conditions. Like Joanna Stern, he found the hinge holds up well, but like any other foldable, the crease gets a lot more visible (and a bit more even after only 500), matte display or not.
- Here’s some of my favorite iPhone Duo reviews.
I’ve been absorbing every iPhone Duo review I can find (after ours), so I thought I’d share links to a few others that I liked:
- Joanna Stern got a machine to repeatedly fold and unfold the Duo overnight to test the hinge. Super fun video.
- In MKBHD’s video, I love the transitions separating chapters.
- Michael Fisher, aka MrMobile, showcases a bunch of made-for-Duo apps that make me want to buy the phone immediately.
What have been your favorite reviews?
- The iPhone Duo might get Apple Pencil support very soon.
It’s apparently available in the iOS 27 release candidate, according to Creative Strategies analyst Max Weinbach. Things could always change ahead of the public release full release, but the feature seems likely to make the final cut.
When Apple first announced the foldable, it said Apple Pencil support would arrive “later this year.”
Apple says it only has ‘limited’ iPhone Duo units for in-store sales

Photo: Amelia Holowaty Krales / The VergeApple says it will have “limited” iPhone Duo models for sale in stores, according to a report from Reuters. The iPhone Duo launches on Friday, October 23rd, but online preorders quickly sold out, with some delivery estimates extending into next year.
“On Friday morning, our teams look forward to welcoming customers at Apple Stores to experience iPhone Duo and the incredible iPhone line-up for themselves,” Apple said in a statement to Reuters. “Apple Stores will have limited iPhone Duo available for walk-in customers, and we’re working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible.”
