Game Boy Camera, meet pocket camera.

This prototype is a fully functional Game Boy Pocket, with a removable Game Boy Camera module and interchangeable CS-mount lenses! It’s from 8-bit photog Crissa Graves, who previously made a Game Boy Camera that fully fits inside a cartridge. “You can still play Tetris and Pokemon one-handed,” she tells me — but no speaker.

USB-C charging — and still has link port access for a Game Boy Printer! 1800mAh battery for hours of photos.
“CS Mount lens, but I’ll likely share the design files so makers can customize it for whatever lens they’d like.“
“By the time I’m done, it should be 109 x 61.8 x 23.5 mm (18.5mm at the thinnest part). For reference, Ricoh GR III is 109 x 62 x 33mm, which was the size aim.“
“The smallest Game Boy Camera cartridge ever!“
“4 completely custom circuit boards: the main CPU, the shutter & power button board, a flexible PCB board to connect the screen to the CPU, and the cartridge.”

What if your DJI Pocket camera could put on wings and fly?

The HoverAir Versa is the next entry from the flying selfie cam company. No date or price yet, but it should hit Indiegogo in August. I’d wait for retail: We liked X1, but X1 Pro had lots of early issues, and the company can’t legally ship its Aqua (or likely this Versa) to the US at all.

DJI camera clone company Xtra claims it’s ‘in close communication’ with the FCC.

If so, that would be new — the FCC proposed a $25,000 fine against Xtra for failing to respond to its letters, and has since revealed plans to ban Xtra from importing and selling more of its existing cameras in the US. Xtra might be canceling its new DJI Osmo Pocket 4 Pro variant, too.

Honor reveals the Robot Phone’s impressive camera specs.

World Cup cameo aside, we haven’t heard much since MWC, but Honor is gearing up to release the gimbal-equipped phone in China soon. It’s teasing the camera’s capabilities, including a 200-megapixel, f/1.6, 1/1.2.8-inch-type gimbal camera, and a separate 200-megapixel, f/2.6, 1/1.4-inch-type periscope. The gimbal itself will support automatic subject tracking and six different shooting modes.

Civilizational decline.

Vertical video has been taking over for years, and David Pierce says the conquest may now be complete. It didn’t have to be this way.

Sony’s $4,900 FX5 cinema camera looks stacked and is stacked.

The new Sony FX5 has a huge list of features for cinematographers. To name a few: a full-frame fully-stacked 5K sensor with open gate recording, three base ISO settings, dual gain shooting, and up to 120fps recording. And instead of just a typical add-on handle for XLR connections, you can instead slap on a $698 tiltable OLED viewfinder.

I wish every EVF-less camera had an EVF option.

Edelkrone’s new robotic camera system folds down small enough to carry in a backpack.

The $5,579 kit bundles three of the company’s motorized camera control units including its DollyOne v2 that can autonomously roll around a studio, a JibOne v3 that can raise and lower, and Edelkrone’s HeadPlus v3 mount that can pan, tilt, and roll a camera.

I finally spotted someone filming a concert on their 3DS.

The trend isn’t new, but the only thing cooler than catching Nemophila’s performance last week at The Meadows in Brooklyn was seeing and capturing a shot of this person recording on their Nintendo 3DS.

The cracked screen makes it even more metal.🤘🏻

Sony is teasing its first new RX10 superzoom camera in nearly nine years.

The Sony Alpha Instagram account shared a short and vague teaser for a new Sony RX10 camera that will be announced on July 9th at 10AM ET. The last version was 2017’s RX10 IV that launched with a 24-600mm 25x optical zoom lens, a 20.1-megapixel 1-inch sensor, and up to 24fps capture capabilities with autofocus and tracking.

DJI and Insta360 are suing each other over baby steadicams.

DJI sued in China when Insta360 muscled in on drones, and both companies are Spider-Man Pointing in US lawsuits now they’re competing on stickcams. Recall: Insta360 just launched its Osmo Pocket competitor Luna Ultra in the US, but DJI can’t sell its Osmo Pocket 4 here.

Find the complaints here, here, here, and here.

Insta360’s DJI Pocket rival is on sale early.

Technically, Insta360 hasn’t fully announced the wireless-removable-screen, dual-lens camera yet — but that isn’t stopping retailers. The Luna Ultra is $770 at Best Buy and at B&H, and there’s a $970 “Creator Bundle” at Best Buy which adds an extended battery handle, wireless microphone, carrying bag, and wide-angle lens. Lots of unannounced specs at those links too.

Wyze is recalling security cams because incorrect instructions could lead to battery punctures.

Using the wrong screws when attaching the camera to its solar panel could accidentally puncture the battery’s metal casing, according to the USCPSC. To date there have been 13 reports of batteries overheating while six exploded and caught fire. Wyze is offering full refunds, replacements, or gift cards to its online store.

Insta360’s DJI Pocket rival will track and match your head movements.

The company hasn’t confirmed when its dual camera Luna Ultra will see a global release, but it recently teased a new head-tracking accessory. The POV Head Tracker is worn like an open-style earbud and translates your head movements to the Luna Ultra so it’s always capturing what you’re looking at.

Nest cams can now recognize your furry friends.

The new feature in Google Home lets you add your pets’ faces to your indoor cameras, so you get alerts that tell you which cat is walking on the counter rather than just that a cat is traversing the kitchen. To enable it, type your pet’s name and species into the Ask Home search box in the Home app; you need Google Home Premium Advanced ($20/month).

An early hands on demonstrates one of the best feature of Insta360’s DJI Pocket rival.

The Insta360 Luna is already available for preorder in China, but a new hands on video reveals a feature you won’t find on DJI’s. The controls and rotating screen on the front of the Luna and dual-lens Luna Ultra are removable, becoming a wireless remote that even has a built-in microphone.

The Robot Phone is coming soon.

Honor says it’ll launch in Q3, meaning July-September, though we’re still expecting it to be a China exclusive. The news was announced at the Cannes Film Festival, where Honor celebrated its partnership with professional cinema camera manufacturer Arri. The Robot Phone will be the first to include “core elements of Arri image science.”

DJI’s Osmo Pocket 4P is the first dual camera version of its handheld baby steadicam.

Following the Osmo Pocket 4’s debut nearly a month ago, DJI announced a long-rumored dual camera alternative called the Osmo Pocket 4P during the Cannes film festival today. While it can capture footage in the high-dynamic range 10-bit D-Log2 format, details on the 4P’s zoom capabilities, pricing, and US availability weren’t revealed.

Sony... these photos look terrible.

Sony’s trying to show off the AI Camera Assistant on the new Xperia 1 VIII, but I’m not sure a bunch of blown-out photos with weird ideas about highlights and shadows will convince anyone this is worth it. Our own Dominic Preston says he saw better results in his briefing, but this is looking pretty grim. (h/t Manideep!)

Ring cameras now support 2K across the line.

The home security company launched two new products today: the Ring Spotlight Cam (2nd Gen) at $169.99 and the Ring Floodlight Cam (2nd Gen) at $199.99. Both feature Ring’s Retinal 2K video resolution, bringing higher-res support to Ring’s base models.

Increased resolution provides clearer video and better zoom capabilities and feeds richer data into Ring’s AI features, such as Search Party, AI-generated text descriptions, and search history. The cameras will be available on June 3rd.
