<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When the Trump administration announced yesterday that <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/972259/us-foreign-robots-power-inverter-ban">it was banning “advanced robotic devices” from entering the United States</a>, the headlines were all about <em>humanoids</em>. But spying doesn’t require legs — and neither does the FCC’s robot ban. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The robot ban will sweep up robot vacuum cleaners too<em>,</em> FCC media relations director Katie Gorscak confirms to <em>The Verge.</em> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s not coming for your existing Roomba, and companies can keep importing and selling already approved ones. But the government claims that future foreign robots pose a national security risk, and even robovac companies are suddenly being asked to commit to US manufacturing. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While the government did include “humanoid robots” and “quadrupeds” among the bots it wants to ban, the ban is <em>far </em>broader than that. It covers almost any new software-controlled robot that travels over the ground, weighs more than 4.4 pounds (including any dock), can perceive its environment, and has wireless connectivity. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By that definition, the FCC is banning future robot lawnmowers, sidewalk delivery robots, and the robots that crate around packages at your local Amazon warehouse, too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It was already clear from the government’s ban announcement that it was thinking about robot vacuums. <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/sites/default/files/robots-nsd.pdf">In the National Security Determination</a> that the FCC is using to justify the ban, the government explicitly calls out my reporting on <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/879088/dji-romo-hack-vulnerability-remote-control-camera-access-mqtt" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.theverge.com/tech/879088/dji-romo-hack-vulnerability-remote-control-camera-access-mqtt">the incredibly poor security that let one man access 7,000 DJI robovacs around the world</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/899906/fcc-router-ban-march-2026-explainer">like the consumer router ban</a>, the FCC isn’t actually targeting companies with poor security. It’s targeting basically every robovac company, regardless of their security practices — because basically every robovac is manufactured outside the US. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/844964/how-irobot-invented-the-roomba-and-lost-the-future-of-home-robotics">Even before the US-based maker of the Roomba went bankrupt</a>, its robots were built by a Chinese company. Just like Apple and Google and most every other gadget brand, these things are not produced domestically.  </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, the vast majority of robot vacuums are designed by Chinese companies, too — all of the top five, including Roborock, Ecovacs, Dreame, Xiaomi, and Narwal, are Chinese entities. <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/921432/dyson-robot-vacuum-motor-picea">Even Dyson is turning to Chinese manufacturers</a>. Following bankruptcy, the Roomba brand is now owned by <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/844474/who-is-picea-robotics-company-owns-irobot">a Chinese company too, its former</a> <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/844474/who-is-picea-robotics-company-owns-irobot">contract manufacturer Picea</a>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“There are very few non-Chinese brands these days and their share is so small that it’s difficult to track,” IDC analyst Jitesh Ubrani tells <em>The Verge</em>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even Matic, our <a href="https://www.theverge.com/22997597/best-robot-vacuum-cleaner">top robovac pick</a> that’s assembled in California, may have to apply for a waiver for new models. It doesn’t yet source 65 percent of components from the United States, co-founder and CEO Mehul Nariyawala tells <em>The Verge</em>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because yes, even US companies need to swear their robots are made in the US to get the government’s waiver. Meanwhile, foreign companies will need to swear they’re investing in US manufacturing — <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/969725/fcc-drone-ban-odyssey-robot-galiview-etak-randolph-howard-eason">or lie, like that DJI front company I wrote about</a>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If Trump and Carr were focused on actually protecting US citizens from the incredibly worrying security practices of smart home companies, I might argue that the FCC shouldn’t exempt cleaning robots, as they can spy just as effectively as a humanoid. The DJI Romo robovac was a chilling example, letting someone on the other side of the planet <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/879088/dji-romo-hack-vulnerability-remote-control-camera-access-mqtt">map out my colleague Thomas Ricker’s home</a>, but it gets much worse — read about <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/925696/yarbo-robot-lawn-mower-hack-remote-control-camera-access-mqtt">the robot lawnmower that ran me over</a> to hear how.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But again, the government isn’t asking these companies <em>any</em> questions about security — not one — to get the waiver that lets them through. The FCC only wants to know <em>where </em>they’re designed and made and assembled and tested and influenced, and get a specific commitment to start manufacturing them in the US instead. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even then, it appears the FCC will simply preference US companies without any new commitments to security or US manufacturing, like it did <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/911888/netgear-router-ban-conditional-approval">when it almost immediately let Netgear off the hook</a> — even though Netgear’s routers were among those targeted in the Volt Typhoon incident that helped justify the router ban to begin with. Four unnamed sources <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/trump-administration-ban-new-chinese-robots-inverters-protecting-us-ai-buildout-2026-07-28/">told <em>Reuters</em></a> that “the FCC is expected to exempt many non-Chinese suppliers from the restrictions.” </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The government isn’t de facto banning <em>every</em> type of robot made outside the US without its special waiver. It already has exceptions for self-driving cars and trains, unmanned aircraft and underwater vehicles, surgical robots, wheelchairs, and fixed robot arms for industrial and medical use. But most robots now have an uncertain future in the United States.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s also worth repeating that the FCC is not coming for <em>your</em> existing robots, just like it isn’t coming for your existing routers or drones. But it’s also worth repeating that if these gadgets truly pose a national security risk, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cObUGfX0AKg">it’s kind of silly</a> to do nothing about the ones we’ve already purchased.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The US government is targeting China with a new import ban on “advanced robotic devices” and power inverters made in foreign countries, as <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/trump-administration-ban-new-chinese-robots-inverters-protecting-us-ai-buildout-2026-07-28/">reported earlier by <em>Reuters</em></a>. In <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-423682A1.pdf">an announcement on Tuesday</a>, the Federal Communications Commission says the ban will include “mobile” robots, such as humanoid and quadruped models — but it is not limited to robots that walk around.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Though the FCC says the move isn’t targeted at a specific country, it will have a major impact on China as the country ramps up <a href="https://apnews.com/article/china-humanoid-robots-ai-demand-7d542b5ee92caa9d79efa28de89afbbe">efforts to produce humanoid robots</a>, some of which we’ve seen in viral videos <a href="https://futurism.com/robots-and-machines/robot-michael-jackson-wiping-out-illustrates-industry-problem">stumbling to Michael Jackson</a>, <a href="https://www.techradar.com/pro/usd50-000-t800-robot-decapitates-fellow-android-in-worlds-first-robotics-mma-fight">partaking in MMA</a> fights, and <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/tech-trends/article/3355993/brilliant-us-public-cheers-dancing-unitree-robots-while-congress-looks-ban-them">even appearing on <em>America’s Got Talent</em></a>. Meanwhile, in the US, Tesla has <a href="https://www.theverge.com/transportation/869746/tesla-optimus-gen-3-q1-2026-earnings">discontinued its Model S and Model X vehicles</a> to make room for its Optimus humanoid robot production.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China is also home to the <a href="https://www.woodmac.com/press-releases/solar-inverter-ranking-h1-2025/">world’s leading power inverter producers</a> — Sungrow and the already-blacklisted Huawei — which are often used in solar panel arrays and other renewable energy systems. In its announcement, the FCC cites “unacceptable risks to the national security of the United States or the safety and security of United States persons” as the reason for the ban.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.fcc.gov/covered-list-faqs-robots-inverters">A FAQ page published by the FCC</a> defines an “advanced robotic device” as a machine that is capable of “locomotion, obstacle avoidance, navigation, or movement on the ground;” comes with a sensor that perceives the surrounding environment; and has a chip for network connectivity. It must also weigh more than 4.4 pounds (including its docking station, if it has one). </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By that definition, even future robot vacuums would automatically be banned if they do not obtain a waiver. The FCC does not appear to be limiting this ban to robots with legs. In fact, <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/sites/default/files/robots-nsd.pdf">the National Security Determination</a> that the FCC is using to justify the move explicitly mentions <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/879088/dji-romo-hack-vulnerability-remote-control-camera-access-mqtt"><em>The Verge</em>’s reporting</a> on the poor security of DJI’s Romo robovac.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Similar to the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/899172/fcc-foreign-router-ban">US government’s ban on foreign-made routers</a>, companies can request a waiver if they want to keep bringing new products into the US, but the waiver application does not include any requirements to improve the security of those robots or inverters. Existing products in the US also won’t be subject to the ban, so individuals and companies can keep on using existing robots and inverters.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Like previously, the US government seems to care primarily about <em>where</em> these devices are designed and manufactured before they get a waiver — and every applicant needs to provide a detailed plan to start manufacturing them in the United States instead. Sources tell <em>Reuters</em> that the FCC “is expected to exempt many non-Chinese suppliers from the restrictions.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The FCC says today that all robots and power inverters can keep getting security and compatibility updates through January 1st, 2029 thanks to an <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-26-789A1.pdf">additional waiver</a>, but the agency is once again misleading the public about how those updates work. Companies do not currently need to inform the FCC when they push security updates to their devices.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In June, Nintendo announced <a href="https://www.theverge.com/games/942808/nintendo-switch-2-replaceable-battery-eu">a new version of the Switch 2</a> that should let you easily replace its battery pack — but only for Europe. Logitech will do much the same. <a href="https://www.theverge.com/column/939026/user-replaceable-batteries-eu-european-union-legislation">User-replaceable batteries will be the law in Europe</a> in February 2027, but instead of bringing them to the rest of the world, Logitech plans to ship one version of its wireless mice to Europe and a different version everywhere else.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That’s the word from Logitech’s new gaming boss, Robin Piispanen. We talked about it over iced vanilla lattes at my local cafe, right after discussing <a href="https://www.theverge.com/games/971651/logitech-handheld-business-g-cloud-robin-piispanen-interview">how Logitech isn’t sure it wants to make another gaming handheld</a>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Why? Logitech believes that less-repairable peripherals might actually be superior, once you consider the tradeoffs.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“It’s not just the cost, you’re also adding weight,” Piispanen tells <em>The Verge</em>. He says that Logitech typically ships devices with a lightweight soft-sided lithium-based battery inside, with a very thin cable, because the company knows most people won’t take them apart. “But that is not safe for you to operate on, we can’t give that to you in good conscience and say, hey, go replace a soft-pack battery.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead, Logitech’s wireless products in Europe will ship with a hard-pack battery, a more rigid design that’s harder to puncture accidentally. (Not to overstate the risk, but punctured lithium-based batteries can quickly start fires.) For extra safety, Piispanen says Logitech will offer certified replacement batteries in Europe, too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But he says he won’t ship them to the United States, for example. He says Logitech ran the numbers, and its forecasts suggest few people will bother replacing those batteries.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“How many people are going to open up their own mouse, take out the battery, put in a new one because the battery ran old?” he asks. Piispanen says replaceable batteries make more sense for expensive products like laptops or phones, but that people tend to replace Logitech’s $50 to $100 wireless mice as they wear down.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While I agree that Logitech’s mice are currently disposable products, I strongly disagree that they <em>should continue</em> to be that way. Isn’t the right-to-repair movement about changing that outlook on the world? Would consumers change that behavior if the devices were easier to fix?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So I ask Piispanen, who says he believes in right-to-repair: <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/667173/logitech-forever-mouse-ifixit-repair-parts-editorial">Why doesn’t Logitech actually sell the wear-and-tear parts for its mice</a>, despite claiming it does? Why doesn’t it sell the rubber grip pads on the side of my Logitech G502 Lightspeed, which I’ve now worn a hole through, or the mouse switch that’s beginning to double-click on the side of my mouse? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It sounds like the answer is: Logitech isn’t actually ready to trust consumers with repairs themselves. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Mouse switches means you have to open up the whole mouse, and you’re most likely going to break something,” he says. Replacing the grips means cleaning up old adhesive and replacing it with new adhesive — “that’s a process for you to do it well.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I don&#8217;t want to like, sell you a part just for you to screw it up and then be sad about it,” Piispanen says later. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That said, he says he sees the passion in the community, how some people are willing to void their warranty to modify their Logitech gear, and he seems to take my point that Logitech isn’t fulfilling <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250123655560/en/Logitech-Makes-It-Easier-to-Repair-Your-Electronic-Devices-and-Keep-Them-Longer?feedref=JjAwJuNHiystnCoBq_hl-Q-tiwWZwkcswR1UZtV7eGe24xL9TZOyQUMS3J72mJlQ7fxFuNFTHSunhvli30RlBNXya2izy9YOgHlBiZQk2LOzmn6JePCpHPCiYGaEx4DL1Rq8pNwkf3AarimpDzQGuQ%3D%3D">its “wear and tear” right-to-repair promise</a> yet. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He says that “the bigger question” is how Logitech can design new products that don’t wear out as quickly. “The mouse you’re talking about, that was seven years old, and I salute you for really wanting to keep on using it,” he says.  </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But he also tells me he’ll take a look at those mouse grips: “I want to see what spare parts we&#8217;re lacking that is wear and tear, because if we&#8217;re talking about things that we actually could do, I want to look into that.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Logitech’s new gaming boss, Robin Piispanen, tells me he likes the idea of gaming handhelds. “It’s such a charming value proposition,” he says, as we sip iced vanilla lattes at my local cafe. But he’s not building one right now. He’s not sure when or if Logitech should try again, after its underwhelming experiment with the Logitech G Cloud streaming handheld. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Right now, in this moment in time, there’s bigger things for us to focus on than doing a second G Cloud,” he tells me. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Personally, I feel like the G Cloud would have a better chance today. <a href="https://www.theverge.com/23405040/logitech-g-cloud-gaming-handheld-review-game-streaming-android-xbox-nvidia-geforce-now">At its 2022 debut</a>, the $350 Logitech handheld was almost completely overshadowed by the <em>far </em>more capable $400 Steam Deck, whose PC chip could keep on playing games without needing reliable internet. But today, the price of a Steam Deck has risen to $789. <a href="https://www.theverge.com/games/938451/steam-deck-price-hike-end-of-handheld-gaming-era">The golden age of handhelds is over</a>, and “the new normal” <a href="https://www.theverge.com/games/949010/best-handheld-gaming-pc">can be prohibitively pricey</a>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sony recently suggested that cloud gaming handhelds like its own PlayStation Portal are one possible hedge against RAMageddon. “Cloud streaming also requires minimal memory, making it&nbsp;an increasingly attractive low-cost thin client device&nbsp;in the current market environment where memory prices are rising,” said a <a href="https://www.theverge.com/games/963132/sony-playstation-future-handheld-pc-business-meeting-end-of-discs">top PlayStation exec in a recent business meeting.</a> Last year, I discovered Nvidia’s GeForce Now had advanced far enough to <a href="https://www.theverge.com/pc-gaming/676167/nvidia-geforce-now-steam-deck-test-hands-on">breathe new life into existing handhelds</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But it sounds like Logitech got burned by its first <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/8/2/23288386/logitech-g-cloud-gaming-handheld-xbox-cloud-gaming-nvidia-geforce-now">Tencent-backed</a> attempt with the original G Cloud. Even people who bought it weren’t necessarily satisfied. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While there was a “realm of players that was super dedicated and loved it,” says Piispanen, it didn’t have staying power for the vast majority of buyers. “The bigger portion, call it the 80 percent, bought it, tried it, and then it ended up in a drawer.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We tried something that we really believed in, and it didn’t really materialize into the use case people wanted,” he says. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The other problem was that the big cloud gaming providers didn’t build out enough infrastructure quickly enough. “Cloud gaming in general really stagnated,” he says, adding later: “Microsoft clearly said cloud is expensive, cloud gaming is expensive to run.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Would Logitech consider building a standalone handheld instead, then, using the lessons it learned from the G Cloud? Piispanen’s not sure about that. He says it’s theoretically possible, something to perhaps look into. But he says Logitech’s core competencies are design and input, and it’d probably partner with another company for the rest.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He says handhelds don’t look like a particularly good business to break into, anyhow: “The handheld only works when you get to a really big scale, and most of the handheld companies also own the content. So the question is then, should I get into content? Look at Nintendo, they own the content. Look at Steam.” </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">His question is just rhetorical, though. We quickly agree that buying studios hasn’t worked out great for Sony and Microsoft recently, and he doesn’t seem interested in competing with Asus and <a href="https://www.theverge.com/games/965123/asus-rog-xbox-ally-x20-oled-preview">its Xbox Ally X</a>. “They operate on slim margins and they don’t own anything. They have to work with everyone else to make it work. It’s not an easy business.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If Logitech were to try handhelds again, he thinks that cloud gaming might still be the way forward — just not quite yet. “Cloud solves weight, it solves battery power, it solves graphics. It solves a lot of things… when you play locally, you don’t have those barriers.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He says, cryptically, that Logitech <em>is</em> investing in the future of cloud despite how the G Cloud turned out, and is actively talking to big players. “We talk to Microsoft, Tencent, and all of them: what do they see? How would this become a bigger play? And then see how we can potentially be a part of that.” </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Does he see an inflection point where cloud infrastructure costs drop dramatically? Is there a point in the next few years where a whole bunch of Nvidia AI data centers are going to age out and become useful for gaming instead? He says he agrees with my “future casting,” but can’t say when it might happen.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“If you figure it out, please let me know,” Piispanen says.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Remember when Meta was planning to <a href="https://www.theverge.com/gadgets/959899/meta-ai-glasses-paywall-rate-limit">charge a $20 monthly subscription fee for the smart glasses feature</a> that lets people hear each other more clearly — even though that feature runs locally on your glasses and doesn’t require the cloud? Meta has paused those plans, spokesperson Tyler Yee confirms to <em>The Verge</em>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The company is <em>not</em> giving up on the idea of a subscription fee for certain features — that’s still moving forward. Yee confirms that “some premium features will be subscription-based over time.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But Conversation Focus, the accessibility feature, “will remain available for free through our Early Access Program for early testers while we work on a better approach.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s one of the company’s statements to <em>The Verge</em>:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most ridiculous part of Meta’s original plan was the “rate limits.” Meta made it sound like it <em>needed</em> to charge a subscription for Conversation Focus because running that service had an incremental cost, to the point that even paid subscribers would only get 15 hours of Conversation Focus per month. That was easy to disprove: When I disconnected my own Meta Ray-Bans from the internet, the feature kept on working. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But Meta isn’t actually promising to abandon those “rate limits.” </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I asked: “Given that Conversation Focus is on-device and Meta understands the backlash, is the thinking that it will no longer be rate-limited?” </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meta’s answer: &#8220;We don’t have any more details to share, but its subscription test is currently paused and we’re still exploring all our options for the best approach.&#8221;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yee says that “not all” premium features will be subscription-based, though. He hints the reason Meta is charging a subscription is so it can subsidize the price of hardware, not to maintain the features themselves: </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I don’t know if I would call my $299 Meta Ray-Bans “free.” But I do know that Meta <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/970901/instagram-meta-glasses-prank-harassment-ban">keeps angering people who <em>don’t</em> like its glasses</a>, so it’d be risky to anger those who <em>do</em> like them, too. I suspect the company has already decided that Conversation Focus will stay free, but is saving that announcement for later — to balance out the reveal of other features that will indeed cost money. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After selling <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/795016/xtra-muse-dji-osmo-pocket-3-us-customs-tariffs">a barely disguised version</a> of the hit DJI Osmo Pocket 3 in the United States last year, Xtra Technology <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/919014/dji-osmo-pocket-4-4p-dual-camera-stabilizer-extra-technology-muse-2-pro">seemed ready to sneak in</a> its version of the new dual-lens Osmo Pocket 4 Pro, too. But today, Xtra has abruptly removed the new Xtra Muse 2 Pro from its website landing page, is pausing preorders indefinitely, and says it’ll refund all the $20 deposits that it’s already collected.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just days after showing off the camera <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q1JMe6hgZs">at a Los Angeles launch event</a>, the company is no longer necessarily committing to launch at all: “XTRA has not made a final announcement regarding future product availability. We have not announced a new product launch timeline at this time. Further information will be shared separately once the relevant plans are confirmed,” <a href="https://store.xtra-us.com/pages/muse-2-pro-early-access">it writes</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Xtra says the move is because “we are unable to confirm a reliable launch timeline at this stage,” but there’s likely another reason behind that. Over the past two weeks, we’ve explained how <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/969725/fcc-drone-ban-odyssey-robot-galiview-etak-randolph-howard-eason">an embarrassed FCC</a> is <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/968310/fcc-dji-drone-camera-ban-skyrover-xtra">cracking down on companies including Xtra</a> for <a href="https://www.theverge.com/policy/964342/fcc-crack-down-dji-front-companies-xtra-skyrover-sgs-lab">helping banned DJI technology</a> enter the United States.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Without FCC authorization, Xtra cannot legally import, sell, or market a radio-equipped gadget in the US. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To be clear, the US government has never justified its drone ban. We haven’t seen it share a shred of public evidence that Chinese consumer drones pose a national security threat, and it certainly hasn’t explained why pocket cameras would be caught up in that drone ban.  </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But  ahead of the ban, it seems DJI’s reaction was to flood the market with new brands that sell its tech. Xtra already sells five different versions of DJI cameras, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/714103/dji-skyrover-x1-evade-ban-amazon">while Skyrover</a> is the most prominent of many new drone brands selling DJI tech. <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/skyrover-debuts-at-best-buy-delivering-premium-drones-with-strong-value-for-us-creators-302719715.html">Skyrover even made it into Best Buy</a>, not to mention Amazon. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On July 10th, the FCC proposed <a href="https://www.theverge.com/policy/964342/fcc-crack-down-dji-front-companies-xtra-skyrover-sgs-lab">a $25,000 fine</a> against Xtra and each of Skyrover’s suppliers for failing to respond to questions about where, exactly, their technology actually comes from. On July 17th, the FCC proposed to <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/968310/fcc-dji-drone-camera-ban-skyrover-xtra">retroactively ban those companies</a> from continuing to sell existing products, too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s not clear if Xtra’s products have actually been rejected by the FCC yet. Technically, the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 Pro was <em>approved</em> by the FCC before the drone ban came down last December, and Xtra’s version was <em>also</em> approved on June 17th. But those FCC documents no longer appear in FCC search results — we only have them <a href="https://fccid.io/2BQH2-XCAME02">because bots scraped them</a> before they mysteriously disappeared. The FCC did not reply to our requests for comment.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Anyhow, it’s unlikely that Xtra will ever be able to “unpause” its reservations for the Muse 2 Pro. It’s still selling its other cameras for now. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you did put down a reservation for the Muse 2 Pro, <a href="https://store.xtra-us.com/pages/muse-2-pro-early-access">the company’s FAQ page</a> explains that you’ll get a “single-use 10% courtesy discount code as an apology for the inconvenience caused by the pause of the Early Bird program,” one that you have to use within 30 days, only at Xtra’s online storefront. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The company says it’ll automatically issue refunds, within 5 to 10 business days, to your original payment method.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are no signs of life in this tiny private office that’s supposed to be the headquarters of Odyssey Robot, an upstart US drone company. We saw three small desks and chairs, but no power strips, no monitors, no keyboards or chargers or decorations. Two of the desks were covered with sealed cardboard packages.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This room is the latest proof: The FCC’s ban on foreign-made drones is a bad joke.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On December 22nd, 2025, the US government claimed — without a shred of public evidence — that foreign consumer drones posed an unacceptable threat to national security. With the help of other agencies, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/849460/fcc-foreign-drone-ban-dji-congress-deadline">banned all future foreign drones</a> from entering the country without a special new waiver.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Like with Carr’s make-it-make-sense <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/899906/fcc-router-ban-march-2026-explainer">consumer internet router ban</a>, that waiver has nothing to do with the security of these products. The application includes zero questions about restricting or improving the technology itself. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead, it gives Carr and President Donald Trump the power to decide losers and winners while beating the “America First” drum. Foreign companies have to submit a detailed plan to build their products in the US, including how much they intend to invest in US manufacturing — <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/911888/netgear-router-ban-conditional-approval">yet US-based Netgear got a waiver</a> from the router ban even though it made no commitment to produce devices outside Asia.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Consumer drones are effectively all made in China, and as of April, it appeared that no one planned to change that as a result of the FCC’s foreign drone ban. Though some US dronemakers exist, they’re pursuing a different and more lucrative opportunity: <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/906306/fcc-drone-ban-who-will-replace-dji-in-us-antigravity-hoverair-skydio">drones that spy and kill</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But Office 18 shows another gaping hole in the FCC’s plan. Instead of creating new US consumer drone companies, it’s incentivizing <em>fake</em> ones instead.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How easy is it to fool the FCC? Just lie on the paperwork, it seems.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just whip up a new company that <em>pretends</em> to build brand-new drones in the USA and count on no one noticing — even if your drones clearly use proprietary DJI wireless tech.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">DJI, the world’s biggest drone company, didn’t dominate drones just because of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-mover_advantage">first-mover advantage</a>. It was technology. DJI’s OcuSync and older Lightbridge real-time video transmission systems were and are the most reliable long-range, low-latency ways to remotely control a consumer-grade drone. Almost every time <em>The Verge</em> has tested another brand, the signal hasn’t been as reliable. It’s a competitive advantage that DJI wouldn’t easily share.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But OcuSync has a telltale fingerprint. It uses specific pairs of radio frequencies, pairs that appear in the FCC’s databases.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When software developer and journalist Konrad Iturbe began watching FCC databases for those frequencies, he realized that DJI was preparing to play a grand game of <em>Whac-A-Mole</em> in the United States. Well ahead of the December 2025 drone ban, a host of new companies had suddenly appeared selling barely disguised versions of DJI technology. He dubbed them “<a href="https://github.com/KonradIT/dji-front-companies">DJI front companies</a>.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most prominent DJI clones to enter the US was Skyrover, which released a budget drone that was a dead ringer for the DJI Mini 4 Pro. Last July, DJI would not confirm or deny to <em>The Verge</em> that “Skyrover” was <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/714103/dji-skyrover-x1-evade-ban-amazon">a disguised version of its own drone</a>, even though security researchers confirmed its app included DJI code.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then, in October, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/795016/xtra-muse-dji-osmo-pocket-3-us-customs-tariffs">Iturbe helped us introduce you to Xtra</a>, the company that lets DJI sneak its popular cameras into the US. When we tested an Xtra camera versus a DJI camera, we found them so identical, it removed any doubt. Again, DJI would not confirm or deny.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a result, US citizens were still able to purchase DJI tech — only now, they were dealing with fly-by-night businesses, with no real guarantee of support in the future.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This June, Iturbe discovered the most brazen attempt yet. The DJI fingerprint led him to the FCC filings for a company named Odyssey Robot, which does business as Galiview Tech. In March, it became the first DJI-equipped drone brand to get FCC approval since the drone ban began. DJI did not reply to requests for comment for this story.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If Galiview was trying to hide the DJI connection, it didn’t try very hard: The company’s website even listed DJI’s trademarked OcuSync tech as a Galiview feature.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wasn’t stopping clandestine Chinese hardware the whole point of the ban? <em>How</em> could the FCC approve this drone?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Simple: On February 6th, a “Randolph Howard Eason” declared on an FCC form that Odyssey Robot&#8217;s drone and controller were made in the United States, and nobody ever questioned that before rubber-stamping its application.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The FCC could have spotted the OcuSync frequencies, or that this supposedly US-manufactured gadget was tested by a Chinese lab, or that it used a Chinese-made antenna also used by another Chinese drone.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But it’s easier than that. Odyssey Robot declared that its drone was designed, developed, and manufactured<em> </em>at 21 Miller Alley Suite 210 in Pasadena, California. Even <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=21+Miller+Alley%2C+Suite+210">a basic Google search can show you</a> that’s not the address of a factory — it’s a coworking space called Industrious that <a href="https://www.industriousoffice.com/access-agreement#:~:text=manufacturing%2C%20or%20for%20any%20other%20use%20prohibited%20by%20the%20Member%20handbook%20is%20not%20permitted">explicitly prohibits members</a> from manufacturing anything onsite.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Odyssey Robot also declared that its drones are assembled at eTak Worldwide Corporation in Grand Prairie, Texas. With 80,000 square feet of warehouse space and 15 loading docks, you could theoretically build drones there. But again, a basic Google search would show you that <a href="https://www.etakworldwide.com/">eTak isn’t an assembler</a>; it’s a <em>recycling</em> company that collects e-waste, <a href="https://greentx.wistron.com/en-global/News/press_release/Content?param1=293">including old batteries</a>, then sorts and dismantles them.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Still, we wanted to be sure. We called up the receptionist at the coworking space in Pasadena; they confirmed that Odyssey Robot was actively renting a two-person private office. Official California business records claimed the company was operating out of Office 18. You know the rest: We found a lonely room with three unused desks topped with cardboard packages.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the FCC had ever seen the website for these drones, it could have found even more eyebrow-raising contradictions. The website claimed that “Galiview Inc.” was founded in 2022 and headquartered in San Francisco, even as it provided a Las Vegas phone number and a Pasadena address.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Based in the heart of San Francisco’s technology innovation hub, we’ve been pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in consumer drone technology,” it claimed.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In reality, public records show that Galiview is not a corporation. It’s a trademark of Odyssey Robot, LLC, which was formed in Delaware in January 2025 and registered in California last December, after what seems like an aborted attempt to call the brand “Flyon” instead. Other trademark filings from February 2026 show it planning at least three products: a Galiview Titan, Galiview Venus, and Galiview Nova.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The company never replied to my emails to contact@flyondrone.com, the one and only email address it has provided publicly. We found its only phone number disconnected: “The subscriber you have dialed is not in service.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">eTak Worldwide, the recycler, also wasn’t answering emails or picking up the phone. “Sorry, but the user’s mailbox can’t accept any more messages,” I heard time and again. We had no better luck with “iNet Expert,” an earlier company from eTak’s founder that claimed to offer wholesale computer parts. Every time I tried the company’s phone tree, the answer was always a robotic “No one is available.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But when I realized iNet Expert was just 30 minutes from my house, I decided to pay it a visit.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The building was locked, but through the window I saw something strange. The primary decoration was a nearly floor-to-ceiling marketing image for a smartphone screen protector from 2014, from a company called Rudaor. It appears that iNet tried to become a US distributor, judging by the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@inetparts/videos">roughly 300 views on YouTube</a>. On the windows of iNet’s office, there were also signs <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20180825053417/http://www.hirutech.com/we-represent">for Hirutech USA</a>, the defunct US arm of a Taiwanese electronics business development firm that once occupied the same address.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The whole building was a time capsule — and yet, it’s still getting a few shipments from overseas, including on July 15th, <a href="https://www.importyeti.com/company/inet-expert">according to import records</a> collected by ImportYeti. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>eTak’s founder has a history of lending out his business address</em>, I thought.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But when I finally stumble across a cell phone number for Richard Lee, founder of eTak and iNet Expert, he says he’d never heard of Odyssey Robot until a week or so earlier.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I’m happy you called me, because we totally have no idea what’s going on,” Lee told me on July 13th. “Why are people using our company name to do this kind of thing? It’s kind of ridiculous.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I show him Odyssey Robot’s sworn attestation that eTak assembles its drones, he says it must have picked his address out of a search engine.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“No, we don’t assemble anything, we only refurbish,” he says when I ask, adding that eTak doesn’t have the manpower. He says he’s recycled batteries for Taiwanese computer maker Wistron (which builds laptops for giants like HP and Dell), UV ink cartridges for Anker, and vacuums for Ecovacs, but he’s never had a relationship with dronemaker DJI.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“They are a huge company, they will not choose us,” he says. “If they use our company name, it’s not fair for us, it’s not right.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But whoever’s behind Odyssey Robot is likely to get away with the lies.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">Since 2023, every foreign company selling wireless gadgets in the United States has theoretically needed an extra human in the loop, based in the United States. <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/laboratory-division/equipment-authorization-approval-guide/equipment-authorization-system#:~:text=beginning%20February%206%2C%202023">That February</a> is when the FCC added the requirement for a “US agent” who it can legally serve papers to, and communicate with, so the FCC can enforce against a company that might be unreachable under international law.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But there’s nothing in <a href="https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-47/chapter-I/subchapter-A/part-2/subpart-J#p-2.911(d)(7)">the rules</a> that requires anyone to verify the US agent is a known, reputable person with a working telephone number and email address, working out of an actual permanent office. And though the FCC might have <em>guidelines</em> suggesting those things, Keller &amp; Heckman partner Greg Kunkle tells <em>The Verge</em> that it’s unlikely anyone’s bothering to check.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“To my knowledge, there’s no real vetting of the US agent,” he tells <em>The Verge</em>. “If you’re making a misstatement, that’s a rule violation, but I don’t think the FCC or TCB is checking those actively. I’m not sure anybody is.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kunkle says that for the past decade or so, FCC authorizations haven’t actually been handled by the FCC at all — the agency outsourced that role to <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/sites/default/files/34-TCB-Market-Surveillance-TCB_Apr_2026.pdf">roughly 40</a> private companies called TCBs, short for Telecommunications Certification Bodies. “Once the TCB finishes its process, you’re good to go,” says Kunkle, adding that those authorizations go straight into the FCC database with no more FCC input at all.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A TCB could theoretically get in trouble for letting banned companies through, even lose its status — and the FCC <em>does</em> ask TCBs not to take the “US agent” at their word. The agency added <a href="https://apps.fcc.gov/kdb/GetAttachment.html?id=XwvSuxlozSVEhSKc15aQPw%3D%3D&amp;desc=986446%20D01%20Covered%20Equipment%20Guidance%20v04&amp;tracking_number=325672">specific guidelines this past December</a> about that, including the requirement for “a valid physical US mailing address,” not just a virtual mailbox or a vacant lot:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“TCBs should not rely solely on the applicant’s certification,” the FCC writes. If a TCB has any reason to believe that a gadget <em>may</em> be banned, the FCC says it shouldn’t process the application at all. And if a TCB decides it did the wrong thing, it should “immediately submit a KDB inquiry explaining the issue to the FCC,” the agency adds.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But does that happen? We reached out to TÜV Rheinland, the TCB that approved Odyssey Robot’s FCC authorization, to let it know we were writing a story about Odyssey Robot making potentially fraudulent attestations, and the company <em>still</em> couldn’t find anything wrong.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“As of today, we do not have any concrete evidence for questioning our certifications to Odyssey Robot. If there is a reasonable basis for questioning a certification, we will follow the procedures established by the FCC for such cases,” TÜV Rheinland communications manager Maximilian Grün told <em>The Verge</em> on July 15th.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">TÜV Rheinland said it hadn’t received any communication from the FCC regarding Odyssey Robot, but also that Odyssey Robot did not forge the TÜV Rheinland test reports attached to its FCC filing. Those were genuine.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">If the TCBs do their jobs, it’s possible they would catch some fake brands. <a href="https://apps.fcc.gov/kdb/GetAttachment.html?id=dQfN6tcMcj%2FrEmjHGZ%2B3dw%3D%3D&amp;desc=610077%20D01%20TCB%20Post%20Market%20Surveillance%20v06r02&amp;tracking_number=20540">The TCBs are supposed to audit 5 percent of all devices</a> they certify in a calendar year and report back to the FCC with their findings — including whether a company fails to provide a sample of a product for testing. Perhaps Odyssey Robot would have been the 1 in 20 and get caught that way.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But so far, the only “DJI front companies” we’ve seen targeted by the FCC are the ones that journalists brought to the agency’s attention.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On July 10th, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/policy/964342/fcc-crack-down-dji-front-companies-xtra-skyrover-sgs-lab">the FCC proposed $25,000 fines</a> against eight of the “DJI front companies,” noting that they were alerted to the brands through research from Konrad Iturbe and my own coverage on <em>The Verge</em>. It justified the fines, and possibly further action, because those companies’ US agents didn’t even bother replying to the agency’s letters. <em>&nbsp;</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2024, the FCC similarly proposed <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/11/21/24302544/eken-video-doorbell-fcc-fine-fishbot-cutepanda">over $700,000 in fines against Eken</a>, a Hong Kong-based video doorbell manufacturer that also failed to provide working contact information for a US agent. That time, it was journalists <a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/home-garden/home-security-cameras/video-doorbells-sold-by-major-retailers-have-security-flaws-a2579288796/">at <em>Consumer Reports</em></a> who prompted the FCC to act.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But even if the FCC can issue a fine, it probably won’t be able to collect.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Earlier this year, the agency <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-420714A1.pdf">cited the Eken case as evidence</a> that “foreign actors in our equipment authorization have been able to evade US law when products they are responsible for have harmed American consumers.” Even if a company pretends to be based in the US, the FCC can’t reach them if they’re actually in China instead.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There might still be real financial consequences for some DJI front companies. On July 17th, the FCC took things up a notch by threatening to <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/968310/fcc-dji-drone-camera-ban-skyrover-xtra">retroactively ban the DJI fronts’ already-approved products</a> from import, sale, marketing, and distribution, which could be the end for successful brands like Xtra and Skyrover that snuck in before the ban.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But it seems like that might be where the FCC’s direct powers of enforcement end. Former FCC enforcement chief Peter Hyun tells <em>The Verge</em> that the agency will want to send a message to other companies not to do this thing, but the tools it has in its tool belt are forfeitures, cease and desist letters, and “show-cause” orders where a company has to explain why its license shouldn’t be revoked. The FCC could also theoretically help the Department of Justice bring a smuggling charge, he says.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lying smugglers hiding behind disconnected phone numbers won’t be stepping forward to provide their real identities, of course.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On July 21st, a month and a half after Iturbe and <em>The Verge </em>asked the FCC about Odyssey Robot for this story, the agency revealed <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-26-746A1.pdf">it had sent a “show-cause” order to the company</a> a few days after we tipped them off. The FCC’s investigation was limited to sending letters to Odyssey and eTak and noting whether the two entities responded. Odyssey didn’t respond. eTak denied any relationship with Odyssey.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">eTak replied to the FCC on July 13th, the same day I spoke to its founder on the phone.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">The question now isn’t what happens to the empty husk of Odyssey Robot, but how many other smugglers might sneak through when the agency <em>isn’t</em> tipped off. If the only reason the FCC caught Odyssey is a guy named Konrad — well, that’s not how government agencies are supposed to work.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The FCC’s consumer gadget bans are broken if they don’t require anyone to do a basic Google search before legally approving banned gadgets for import and sale. They’re broken if the FCC can’t track down and make a meaningful example of a bad actor even after they’re caught, because the same lies that made them invisible also shield them from consequences.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since Odyssey hadn’t yet begun selling drones in the US, revoking its FCC authorization likely wouldn’t matter to its mystery owners. It wouldn’t be surprising if their takeaway is to lie more carefully, rather than not lying at all.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But it does seem that the FCC is attempting to close some loopholes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At first, it seemed that the FCC was following the America First formula of punishing Chinese entities based on their affiliation rather than their actions — it took action <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-414369A1.pdf">against eight so-called “bad labs”</a> that test radios in China simply because Chinese state-sponsored entities had more than 10 percent equity. When it moved against <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-26-744A1.pdf">SGS-CSTC Shenzhen</a>, a lab used by at least one DJI front, it didn’t mention that front in its justification for the move.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But on July 21st, the FCC <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-26-745A1.pdf">moved against test lab Shenzhen STS</a> because it “willfully provided false test results” for a variety of Bluetooth headsets, phones, and tablets, which the lab blamed on negligent staff. Perhaps the FCC will act against TCBs and test labs that aren’t carefully checking banned gadgets, too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The agency is also now proposing to make online retailers like Amazon display the FCC IDs of each device on their product pages so that consumers can check for themselves whether the names line up, at least. Amazon already collects those FCC IDs from sellers, but spokesperson Juliana Karber confirms the company’s never required them to actually display the IDs publicly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The FCC did not respond to any of our repeated requests for comment over the past two months.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">So far, we’ve been unable to track down “Randolph Howard Eason,” the “compliance director” who submitted Odyssey Robot’s paperwork. No one we’ve found by that name or similar seems likely to be a fit, and those who might have been paid by Odyssey — like the coworking space and TÜV Rheinland — declined to tell <em>The Verge</em> anything more about their clients.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not that we’d necessarily get very far, because Odyssey Robot used middlemen to cover its tracks. For example, Sean Hartlieb, an attorney in Hawaii who processed the “Galiview” trademark, tells <em>The Verge</em> that he never interacted with the company at all. He says he processes trademark filings for all sorts of Chinese companies as a side gig, getting his assignments from a Chinese firm that charges a flat fee for US trademarks.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By paying small standardized fees, it might not be that expensive for a big company to build lots of shell companies and see which ones escape notice. “$20,000, maybe something like that?” Kunkle suggests each might cost. “Trademarks, TCBs, test labs, it’s probably somewhere in that range. It’s not much more than that.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So what keeps a big foreign brand from sneaking through?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I hate to say it, but it would be pretty easy,” says Kunkle. “I think just the volume of devices coming into the United States — if you&#8217;re the type of person that&#8217;s willing to fudge this paperwork and you reside in some place where you think you&#8217;re unreachable by the US government, I don&#8217;t think this would be hard to fake at all.”</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">If anyone were to make a definitive link between Odyssey Robot and DJI, I thought it would be one of the firms that registered its LLC in the United States. Odyssey Robot is currently registered through Delaware Business Incorporators and California Registered Agent.&nbsp;But Delaware is a state that lets companies set up LLCs anonymously.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Unfortunately, it opens up the door to fraud and there’s not much recourse,” says the receptionist at Delaware Business Incorporators.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If I want to reach Odyssey Robot, the receptionist at California Registered Agent tells me, I can try mailing the message to her office in Sacramento instead.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We&#8217;re real!” she says. “Sometimes our clients are not, unfortunately.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, he’s helped the company create <a href="https://lego.com/en-us/product/donkey-kong-arcade-72051">a $200 <em>Donkey Kong</em> arcade machine set</a> that managed to win even Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto’s favor — or so he’s told.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It doesn’t play quite like <em>Donkey Kong</em>, of course. Jumpman, the character that would be renamed Mario, can never reach the top under his own power. But like <a href="https://www.theverge.com/tech/951465/lego-icons-space-arcade-pinball-machine-astronaut-minifigure">Lego’s $230 pinball machine</a>, it <em>does</em> contain a basic fully functional game. There’s a working joystick to move Mario left and right a bit, and a button to make him leap. Throw a lever, and you’ll release one of an endless series of barrels for him to jump. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They’re the same original barrels that Lego released in 1989 for its first pirate sets, Merriam confirms, saying it’s his favorite thing about the set — and the biggest challenge was figuring out how to make them roll slowly enough without getting stuck. “I rolled thousands of barrels down those tracks to figure it out,” he tells <em>The Verge</em>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’ll share his full answer about how the mechanism works at the bottom of this post.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’d heard that Nintendo actually works with Lego on its sets, and I was curious if Shigeru Miyamoto himself, the creator of Donkey Kong and Mario, might have been involved. Merriam says he hasn’t met Miyamoto yet — “but I did hear that he is very happy with the execution of this set.” </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nintendo did have one specific piece of feedback, Merriam says: “One small request was to make the poison barrels heavier than the regular ones, so we added Minifigure heads inside them.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Theoretically, you <em>could</em> reunite Mario with damsel-in-distress Pauline (who has <a href="https://www.theverge.com/nintendo/703468/donkey-kong-bananza-developer-interview-switch-2">a lot more agency these days</a>) by simply moving him with your fingers. Merriam confirms that the new Jumpman Lego element is detachable. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, how does a single lever release endless barrels? I’ll let the designer speak for himself:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Q:&nbsp;How does the barrel mechanism work, and how many barrels fit inside of it at a time?</strong>&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The barrel mechanism is essentially a pump. It uses a stack of 14 Barrels going up the side of the model. Each time the barrel lever is pulled,&nbsp;it adds one barrel to the bottom of the&nbsp;stack&nbsp;and one falls out the top. The system holds 20 barrels so there can be 6 barrels rolling down at a time.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Q:&nbsp;Do the barrels roll all the way down to the bottom? Do they fall out of the set, and need to be reinserted into the slot, or does the mechanism bring them back to the top?&nbsp;</strong>&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The barrels roll all the way from the top to the bottom where they are collected in a hopper that is connected to the barrel pump. This forms an infinite barrel loop which is, by definition,&nbsp;“barrels of fun”.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Q:&nbsp;What was the biggest hurdle in designing and testing that mechanism?</strong>&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The biggest challenge was getting the barrels to roll down slowly without stopping or getting stuck. This was achieved through a combination of rolling&nbsp;over steps, LEGO studs, slopes, bows and using LEGO Technic beams which are slightly thinner than LEGO Bricks. This allowed us to capture the feeling of the gameplay where the barrel rolls down slowly. I rolled thousands of barrels down those tracks to figure it out… Those barrels drove me&nbsp;bananas!&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The second biggest hurdle was finding a way to get the barrel from the bottom to the top again. We built&nbsp;all kinds of stuff;&nbsp;things to shoot one barrel from the bottom to the top, worm gears, force multiplication levers, and more. But it turned the right answer was simply a lot more barrels.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Q:&nbsp;How do the joystick and button make Jumpman/Mario move?</strong>&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The joystick moves Jumpman from left to right using a long lever up the back of the model, connected to a&nbsp;dingler. The jump button uses a similar mechanism used in a piano key. When it is pressed down in front of the model, the other end of a see-saw lever presses up on a long rod with Jumpman at the top. When the button is&nbsp;released&nbsp;gravity returns&nbsp;Jumpman&nbsp;to the bottom.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last October, we told you how the FCC had given itself <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/808104/fcc-order-retroactive-ban-transmitter-national-security">the power to <em>retroactively</em> ban gadgets</a> that have already received its approval to be imported and sold in the United States. Now, the FCC’s getting ready to wield that power for the first time, by cracking down on the “DJI front companies” suspected of sneaking the Chinese company’s tech past <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/849460/fcc-foreign-drone-ban-dji-congress-deadline">its foreign drone ban</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two Fridays ago, the FCC had <a href="https://www.theverge.com/policy/964342/fcc-crack-down-dji-front-companies-xtra-skyrover-sgs-lab">already proposed a $25,000 fine</a> on eight of those “front companies,” including the ones behind <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/714103/dji-skyrover-x1-evade-ban-amazon">the Skyrover drones</a> and <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/795016/xtra-muse-dji-osmo-pocket-3-us-customs-tariffs">Xtra cameras</a>. But now, the FCC is proposing a lot more than a slap on the wrist — <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/document/fcc-proposes-prohibit-import-marketing-covered-equipment">it’s planning to ban those same companies</a> from continuing to import, distribute, market, and sell their existing drones and cameras.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, we highlighted a deal <a href="https://www.theverge.com/gadgets/961612/xtra-muse-dji-osmo-pocket-3-ipad-air-magic-mouse-deal-sale">on Xtra’s version of the DJI Osmo Pocket 3</a> just two weeks ago, a product that already got FCC approval before the drone ban ever came down, and a product that Amazon offers with next-day shipping. If the FCC’s retroactive ban goes into effect, that product should disappear from all major online retailers and Xtra’s own website, and the company may even need to write off however many cameras are still sitting in US warehouses like Amazon’s.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ban <em>wouldn’t </em>affect gadgets that have already been purchased, and it wouldn’t happen immediately. The FCC’s currently taking public comments for 30 days first. While the FCC has “tentatively” concluded that these companies are selling equipment that should be banned over national security fears, it claims it’ll listen to “specific evidence” otherwise. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But that should maybe be taken with a grain of salt:<a href="https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/22/16689838/fcc-net-neutrality-comments-were-largely-ignored"> The FCC largely ignored public comments about net neutrality</a> and <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2018/8/8/17664386/fcc-net-neutrality-ddos-attack-congress-doj">lied about a cyberattack</a>. It’s also worth pointing out that the US government has never provided specific public evidence that foreign drones pose a national security threat to begin with, or why other products like cameras should be caught up in that ban. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the meantime, the FCC says it has “temporarily deferred the grantee codes of these companies,” a phrase that it does not define. (A former FCC official tells <em>The Verge</em> he’s never heard that phrase before; we’re asking the FCC if that means these companies can’t get future gadgets authorized for import and sale.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The specific companies that the FCC is targeting include Cogito Tech, Fixaxo Technology, Lyno Dynamics, Skyhigh Tech, Spatial Hover, SZ Knowact and WaveGo Tech (both of whom are behind Skyrover), and Xtra Technology, none of which responded to the FCC’s requests for information. It also includes agricultural drone brand XAG, which did reportedly reply to the FCC once, but not with the information that the FCC asked for. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All save XAG were brought to the FCC’s attention by Konrad Iturbe, who <a href="https://github.com/KonradIT/dji-front-companies/blob/main/to-catch-a-vibe-paper.pdf">figured out how to track</a> the “FCC front companies” last year. The FCC also cites <a href="https://www.theverge.com/report/795016/xtra-muse-dji-osmo-pocket-3-us-customs-tariffs">our story about Xtra</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, the FCC is also announcing that <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/document/oet-institutes-proceeding-withdraw-recognition-sgs-cstc-shenzhen">it’s parting ways</a> with one of the Chinese test labs that helped some of these products make it to market: SGS-CSTC Shenzhen. While SGS-CSTC did reply to the FCC to claim it’s not controlled by the Chinese government, as the China-owned CSTC only has 15 percent ownership of the lab, US law currently considers another entity to have control if it has 10 percent or more or a company — <a href="https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-47/chapter-I/subchapter-A/part-2/subpart-J">at least when it comes to authorizing radios</a> for use in the US. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On July 10th, the FCC said it might take even more actions against the eight “DJI front companies” if they didn’t reply by today, July 20th. We’ll let you know what we hear. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Valve has been incredibly friendly to customers who need repairs — which is why it was so surprising to hear  <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1uvl4fg/comment/oxc5d1j/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1">that Valve was already discontinuing the battery</a> for the Steam Deck LCD handheld. It would have meant you could no longer just buy a battery from iFixit and install it yourself. Why would Valve stop stocking the most important replacement part just as people are starting to need it?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here is Valve’s answer to <em>The Verge</em>, as of 5PM ET: “We just confirmed with iFixit that they plan to have batteries back in stock by next week.” </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“iFixit will be getting the same OEM parts sourced through Valve’s partners that they always have,” spokesperson Kaci Aitchison Boyle tells me.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Reddit story wasn’t necessarily<em> </em>false. Earlier today, iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens confirmed to <em>The Verge</em> that it had indeed heard that Valve would no longer make replacement batteries or screens for the original Steam Deck LCD. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But by afternoon, Valve and iFixit had already managed to change that. “They have hooked us up with a supplier, we’re working on it,” Wiens now tells me. And if Valve does decide to sunset the part in the future, iFixit says it’ll be ready to take up the torch by using an aftermarket supplier instead. “I want people to know we are going to find a way to get batteries for these things,” says Wiens.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wiens says Valve has “been a really great partner.” He suspects that Valve and its suppliers simply bet wrong on how many replacement parts they needed to produce.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“If you get the forecast wrong, you run out, or you go wrong in the other direction and spend way too much money on parts sitting around doing nobody any good.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If Valve did discontinue this battery, it likely wouldn’t have anything to do with the EU regulations on user-replacable batteries. Starting in February 2027, new EU laws <em>will</em> require companies to make batteries user-replaceable in the devices they sell. Those regulations have already prompted Nintendo to <a href="https://www.theverge.com/games/961632/nintendo-switch-europe-discontinued">discontinue the original Switch in Europe</a>, and create a new<a href="https://www.theverge.com/games/942808/nintendo-switch-2-replaceable-battery-eu"> EU-only version of the Switch 2 with a replaceable battery</a>. But that shouldn’t affect the Steam Deck LCD, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/news/848595/the-lcd-steam-deck-is-done">because Valve stopped selling it last December</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And I’m not sure US laws would necessarily keep the battery alive, either. Some states have right-to-repair laws that <a href="https://www.theverge.com/23910066/right-to-repair-law-newsom-california-sb-244">force companies to offer parts for a certain number of years</a>, but most explicitly exclude game consoles. (Would Valve want to argue it’s a PC instead?)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Regardless of how easy it is to get this battery, it’s not the easiest to replace, <a href="https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Steam+Deck+Battery+Replacement/149070">as iFixit explained in 2022</a> when it <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/2/15/22935171/valve-steam-deck-replacement-parts-teardown-ifixit">first started stocking official Steam Deck components</a> with Valve’s help. It’s strongly glued into the frame, and you can’t just rip it out without potentially causing a fire; you have to carefully loosen the glue. <a href="https://www.theverge.com/23499215/valve-steam-deck-interview-late-2022#:~:text=Valve%20is%20making%20the%20battery%20easier%20to%20replace">In a 2022 interview with <em>The Verge</em></a>, Valve designers told me why they used glue, but admitted they weren’t satisfied with that adhesive.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I keep hoping we’ll see <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/22/24251327/iphone-16-teardown-repair-battery-adhesive">electrically removable adhesive</a> in handhelds; iFixit’s CEO tells me shock-to-release glues are “often too expensive to include in the original device,” but are possible aftermarket if you’re willing to spend “a couple bucks extra.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perhaps by the time you need an aftermarket battery from a different supplier, it’ll be even better than the original. </p>
