Apple

Founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, Apple is best known for making some of the world’s most ubiquitous consumer devices, software, and services: the iPhone, iPad, iMac and MacBook computers, Apple TV, Apple Watch, iOS, iCloud, iTunes, Apple Music, Apple Pay, and many more. Led by CEO Tim Cook since 2011, Apple is one of the largest technology companies in the world alongside Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Facebook.

Apple’s AirTag loops are on sale, so you can clip your tracker to your keys without overpaying.

Apple just announced a new AirTag, but you’ll still need an extra accessory to actually attach it to anything. Thankfully, Woot is taking $25 off Apple’s Leather AirTag Loop and $20 off Apple’s Leather AirTag Key Ring, selling them for $14.99. Although discontinued, both accessories are still solid picks that won’t wear down quickly with everyday use.

Here’s Tim Cook hanging out with accused rapist Brett Ratner at the Melania screening.

When you’re cool with doing a fascism, what’s a few sexual misconduct accusations? Ratner, who directed Melania, faced multiple allegations of sexual assault and harassment, which led Warner Bros. to cut ties. But a little sexual misconduct (and ties to Epstein) never seemed to bother Melania. And it doesn’t seem to bother Tim Cook either, who posed for this photo on Ratner’s Instagram Stories.

Tim Cook, Andy Jassy, and AMD CEO Lisa Su are at the White House for a VIP screening of the Melania doc.

If you’re wondering what kind of access a gold-and-Gorilla-Glass statue, a $1 million donation, and endless fawning buys you, well, it gets a special advanced screening of a state-sanctioned propaganda documentary film about the First Lady. Okay, it buys more than that, this is just a nice bonus.

One of Apple’s major assembly partners has reportedly been breached.

The breach of Luxshare allegedly happened in December, though Cybernews reports that there is “no evidence” that “consumer iCloud accounts or user passwords were accessed.” The ransomware group RansomHub, which announced the breach, also claims that information from Nvidia, Tesla, and others is part of the stolen data.

Who is really in charge of design at Apple?

The company’s design team technically reports to CEO Tim Cook, but hardware chief John Ternus — reportedly the leading candidate to replace Cook — is now the design group’s “executive sponsor” internally. In that role, Ternus “represents the design organization in executive team gatherings and manages the group’s leaders,” Bloomberg reports.

For All Mankind is back in the spring.

Season 5 of Apple TV’s alternate reality sci-fi series starts streaming on March 27th. It picks up with Mars now home to “a thriving colony with thousands of residents and a base for new missions that will take us even further into the solar system.” You can get a taste of that in the extremely brief new teaser.

A “conscious decision” from OpenAI.

The ChatGPT creator lost out when Apple and Google announced a deal for Gemini to power Siri, but a source told the Financial Times that the company made “a conscious decision to not become the custom model provider for Apple,” instead prioritizing its own AI hardware with ex-Apple designer Jony Ive.

Lightroom or bust.

Apple’s new Creator Studio subscription is pitched as an Adobe alternative, but a lot of Verge commenters made it clear: without a decent equivalent to Lightroom, it won’t work for most photographers.

Nevpaurion:

For the love of god make a lightroom alternative so i can stop giving adobe my money.

Google is bringing a useful Meet feature for hybrid meetings to iOS and Android.

Google is adding Meet’s automatic conference room detection feature to the Meet and Gmail mobile apps. First launched on laptops last year, it uses silent ultrasound signals that are picked up by your phone’s mic to automatically check you into your conference room and prompt you to join Meet calls with your device in Companion mode, avoiding annoying feedback or other problems.

Something huge is coming to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2.

A mysterious kaiju is stirring up trouble in this new teaser for season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The new creature seems bigger than King Kong and more menacing than Godzilla, but we’ll have to wait for the season’s premiere on February 27th to learn the monster’s name.

“I still can’t recommend the Vision Pro.”

Stratechery’s Ben Thompson says Apple just doesn’t understand Vision Pro after the first live NBA broadcast on the device bounced from camera to camera, rather than offering an immersive, courtside experience:

Just let me sit courtside and watch an NBA game. I don’t need a scoreboard, I can look up and see it. I don’t need a pre-game or post-game show, I can simply watch the players warm-up. I don’t need announcers, I’d rather listen to the crowd and the players on the court. You have made a device that, for this specific use case, is better than TV in every way, yet you insist on producing content for it like it is TV! Just stop!

Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai are cowards

X’s deepfake porn feature clearly violates app store guidelines. Why won’t Apple and Google pull it?

Last night I discovered the iPhone’s sleep timer.

It’s very possible I’m the only person who didn’t know this, but just in case: you can go to the Clock app and set a timer, and then under “When Timer Ends,” instead of picking an alarm tone, scroll all the way down and set it to “Stop Playing.” System-wide sleep timer! As someone who sometimes likes to fall asleep listening to podcasts or The Office episodes, this is a game-changer. Thank you, five-year-old Reddit thread, for solving this for me.
