It’s taken around five months since the release of the iPhone 5, but the moment many of you have been waiting for has finally arrived: an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1 has been released. The tool, dubbed evasi0n, is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux, and was developed by a group of hackers known as the evad3rs in the months leading up to now. Jailbreaking gives users almost complete control over your device’s OS, offering you the ability to install custom themes, tweaks, and unsanctioned apps that Apple would otherwise prohibit from the App Store.

The evasi0n jailbreak is the first to support Apple’s newest line of iOS devices, including the iPhone 5, iPad mini, and fourth-gen iPad. The jailbreak also supports older devices that have been upgraded to iOS 6.1, like the iPhone 4, 4S, and even the aging 3GS. Update: Users are reporting that the evasi0n jailbreak is causing Apple’s Weather app to force close. We’ve independently confirmed this error.
